Montgomery Ala. - 7-28-06 - Alabama's HB254 concerning animal identification passed in April during the state's legislative session.
The law allows the Department of Agriculture and Industries to develop and implement an animal identification program that is consistent with the United States Department of Agriculture's National Animal Identification System.
The new identification program is voluntary, says Dr. Charles Franz, executive director, Alabama Veterinary Medical Association.
Gov. Robert Riley signed the act into law. "This one probably would not have passed if we hadn't had the BSE case in Alabama this spring," Franz adds.
