Vira Shield 6+L5 from Novartis Animal Health U.S. Inc. features three-way BVD protection and is formulated with dairy cattle in mind, the company says.
Vira Shield 6+L5 contains Noncytopathic (NCP) Type 1, NCP Type 2 and Cytopathic (CP) Type 1. In addition, to BVD Type 1 and Type 2, the new combination protects against IBR, PI, BRSV and incorporates five-way lepto to protect against reproductive diseases. This combination is also available with H. somnus.
The vaccine is recommended for use in heifers that are two months away from calving and in cows at dry-off to build antibodies in the dam prior to calving and lactation. For prebreeding heifers that are 12 months old, Vira Shield 6+L5 can be used to boost immunity before the first breeding cycle. Vira Shield 6+L5 also can be used in dairy calves to protect against respiratory diseases.
The new product is approved for subcutaneous-only administration. It contains the proprietary Xtend® SP adjuvant technology for higher immunity.
