Try again. Cytologic examination may reveal whether there is an abundance of inflammatory cells or changes in the bacterial ratios, but it won’t identify a cause unless organisms such as Histoplasma or Prototheca species are present. Since our primary concern in this case is salmonellosis, cytology would not be a good next step.
