Brian H. Herrin, DVM, PhD, DACVM (Parasitology): I think one of the first things that veterinarians can do is to have a generalized idea of the tick and tick-borne diseases in their area...There are some resources [veterinarians] can find for the tick-borne diseases in their area. One of them is the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC), and the website is capcvet.org. The (CAPC) has maps that [veterinarians] can go to on a county level and [see] what percentage of dogs test positive for specific tick-borne diseases in that area.
