According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 15,000 horses have contracted the disease since it was first detected in the U.S. in 1999. Approximately one-third of the horses diagnosed with the virus died or were euthanized. The Fort Dodge awareness campaign will include educational efforts directed to the horse enthusiast and professional audiences. In addition, practice management tools for veterinarians will be provided for use in local markets. The campaign offers information about disease risk and emphasizes the importance of vaccination.
