CVC Kansas City posts solid attendance, new programs debut

– According to preliminary estimates, more than 6,000 attendees converged on CVC Kansas City this weekend.

Peggy Shandy Lane, director of Conventions, Meetings and Events reports the conference drew just over 2,000 veterinarians through Sunday, but more walk-in registrations were likely."We are very pleased with the attendance, the depth of our programming and the activity in our exhibit hall," Lane adds.

RSVPs to CVC's free concert with country music singer Lea Ann Womack broke a new conference record. "Tonight’s concert is going to raise the roof off of Municipal," Lane says.

The meeting boasts of 680-plus hours of continuing education covering a variety of medical disciplines from ophthalmology to critical-care medicine. New programs in shelter medicine and expanded sessions for technicians were highlights for this year's conference. Pre-convention programming included the Hospital Design conference showcasing talks from leading veterinary architects and experts Dan Chapel, Dr. Ross Clark, Gary I. Glassman, C. Scott Learned, Mark Hafen, Brad Rabinowitz, Wayne Usiak and Wendy Wheeler. Other preconvention programs included Firstline Live for team training, Progress in Practice and Veterinary Economics Managers' Retreat.

Dr. Marty Becker delivered a motivational talk titled "A changing profession – A look back and ahead to exciting times." He encouraged veterinarians to remember the fun of practice, and renew their commitment to animals and veterinary medicine.

Veterinary Medicine Wet Labs & Workshops focused on minimally invasive fracture repair, ear surgery, radiosurgery, stifle stabilization, cytology, diagnostic cardiology and rehabilitation therapy for small animals. Additional programming included Ask the Expert Luncheons, featuring Drs. Dennis Chew, Peter Emily, Dan Johnson and Alan Rebar.

Some of the sponsored symposia included presentations on advanced stifle repair, canine influenza and frontiers in comparative medicine. Auburn University hosted sessions on sports medicine, while the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management coordinated a variety of talks on pain management.
