National Report

--Dog bites accounted for one-third of all homeowner insurance liability claims in 2008, according to data collected by the nonprofit Insurance Information Institute (III).

The average cost of a claim was up nearly 28 percent from 2003 to $24,461, according to the group, and dog-bite claims chewed up a total $387 million in 2008.

Increased medical bills and the size of settlements, lawsuits, judgments and jury awards are to blame for the climbing costs, according to the organization’s vice president, Loretta Worters.

“(They) have risen well above inflation in recent years," she says.
