Professional Biological Company announces Pulmo-Clear (caprine serumfraction, immunomodulator) has been granted a full license by the U.S. Departmentof Agriculture as an aid in the treatment of equine lower respiratory disease(ELRD). ELRD affects up to 50 percent of Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorsesand is a common syndrome in other young performance breeds, the companysays. ELRD is characterized by chronic coughing, exercise intolerance, reducedenergy and drive, general lethargy, weight loss, nasal discharge, and uponendoscopic examination, excessive mucoid discharge in the trachea. The complexnature of ELRD makes treatment difficult for veterinarians who commonlyprescribe antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, bronchodialators, and expectorants.Cases often improve during treatment, but conditions rapidly reccur whentreatment is stopped extending recovery time and delaying a returnto full health. To address the faulty or improper immune response, Pulmo-Clearworks to modulate the immune system allowing the horse improved recoveryfrom the clinical conditions associated with ELRD, the company says. Efficacystudies demonstrated that Pulmo-Clear, when used with adjunctive therapy, successfully clears lower respiratory tract disease, leading to increasedrecovery rates and reduced recovery times in affected horses. In fact, combineddata from field studies show that Pulmo-Clear helps promote an overall ELRDrecovery rate of 86 percent, the company says.
