Veterinary technicians and students can update themselves on fecal examination technique via a CD-ROM from Novartis Animal Health entitled "The Scoop on Poop."
The CD-ROM, which features Auburn University parasitologist Byron Blagburn, MS, Ph.D., also covers the pros and cons of techniques for identifying parasites as well as other information.
"The accuracy of fecal examinations is greatly influenced by sample size and quality, as well as examination technique and timing," Blagburn says. He emphasizes the importance of annual fecal examinations in adult pets, with multiple examinations for younger animals.
"The risks posed by inadequate testing and techniques are too great to ignore," Blagburn adds, stating that failure to diagnose harmful parasites during routine clinic visits can undermine veterinarian and client relationships while putting clients at risk from zoonotic parasites.
