A relentlessly shifting framework of attacks on LGBTQ+ rights in the United States over the past 12 months has in many cases overwhelmed the support systems already in place. One year ago, we were concerned about Don’t Say Gay, the potential of parents losing parental rights and being arrested for supporting transgender children and sports bans. Many mushrooms possess medicinal benefits. These fungal organisms are beneficial to the immune system and they play a role in other systems as well. They contain a large number of bioactive constituents found in the mushroom, with a special emphasis on the β-glucan content. But not all products labeled as “containing mushrooms” actually do. A study evaluated 10 commercial mushroom products that were purchased on the internet and labeled as containing Turkey Tail mushroom (Coriolus versicolor). From the study results, veterinarians will learn the role the fungal life cycle plays in mushroom quality and receive guidance in selecting appropriate mushroom products for their patients.
