Serene Feed-Through Fly Control uses an insect growth regulator as its active ingredient. Its mode of action is to inhibit the synthesis of chitin. Serene Feed-Through Fly Control contains no organophosphates, the company says.
Dr. Kathy Palma, a veterinary entomologist and vice president of research and development at Triad Specialty Products, says: "As horse owners with extensive expertise in parasitology, we were concerned about the use of organophosphates in oral fly control products and set out to develop a better alternative. The result of our efforts is Serene, which we believe veterinarians and horse owners can now use with confidence."
Formulated as a pelleted top-dressing, the product passes through the horse and is deposited in the manure, where flies lay eggs and breed. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, more than 27,000 flies can emerge from the manure of just one horse each day. In scientific studies, Serene Feed-Through Fly Control inhibited the development of 100 percent of houseflies and 95 percent of stable flies.
