WELLINGTON, FLA. — FujiFilm Medical Systems USA provided a computed radiography (CR) system for the diagnosis and treatment of horses participating in the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, Fla.

The ClearView-CS, enabled the WEF's veterinarians to more accurately detect injuries using digital X-ray technology, which eliminates the need for film.

More than 4,000 jumping and dressage horses competed in the WEF, the world's largest and longest running equestrian sporting event, which took place Jan. 25 through March 19.

"The digital imaging part of it has been a real revolution, and Fuji's generosity in providing us with that ClearView system really made this year pretty unique," says Dr. Christopher Miller, chief veterinarian at WEF. "We do a lot of lameness diagnoses, and that always involves imaging the horse's legs, and it's generally the lower legs."

Fuji digital X-ray systems have been used by leading hospitals throughout the country for more than 20 years, the company says.

Fuji's systems feature quick image availability and deliver consistent, high quality images. The product features fine resolution and image processing capabilities not available with film, the company adds. The system allows for detection of career-limiting abnormalities before a horse shows evidence of lameness.

"We are able to see much more detail, and it's enabled us to routinely image areas of the horses that we didn't do with conventional radiography, such as necks, shoulders, backs and other things that are important to the performance horse but were fairly hard to image prior to the onset of computed systems," Miller says.
