Group protests Ill. spay/neuter program cut

-- A bill before the Illinois House of Representatives could cut state funding for spay/neuter programs.

Alley Cat Allies, a national advocate group for stray and feral cats based in Maryland, is calling on supporters to voice their opposition to the pending legislation in observance of Spay Day USA on Feb. 23.

The bill (HB 5689) would eliminate the Illinois Pet Population Fund, a program that provides funding for spay/neuter programs for low-income pet owners and for feral cats that are part of trap-neuter-return programs. The funding would be re-directed to county animal control programs, according to legislation.

"This legislation is entirely wrong-headed. Cats who are spayed or neutered live better and healthier lives," says Becky Robinson, president of Alley Cat Allies. "But this bill would severely impact access to neuter programs for low-income pet owners and feral cat caregivers."

At press time, the bill was with the Illinois Agriculture and Conservation Committee for review. If the committee approves the bill, it will proceed through second and third readings before the House votes.
