Hartz fish food recalled due to possible Salmonella health risk

Four lots of fish food have been voluntarily recalled due to concerns that one or more containers within the specified lots may have been potentially contaminated with Salmonella, the FDA reports.

According to a release from the FDA, Hartz Mountain Corp. is investigating the source of the problem that led to the recall of four lots of Wardley® Advanced Nutrition™ Perfect Protein™ Tropical Flake Fish Food 1oz. The product was shipped nationally from December 20, 2011, through March 15, 2012, and included 7,056 containers with a UPC code number 0-43324-00591-7. The lots affected were PP34911, PP34912, PP35011, and PP35012, all of which were manufactured by Hartz in its Pleasant Plain, Ohio, facility. The presence of Salmonella was discovered in the lots after a random sample testing was conducted as part of the company’s quality control procedure.

Although there have been no reports of animals or people becoming ill to date, Hartz is taking immediate precautions and removing the product from all retail stores and distribution centers. Fish owners who have purchased this product are urged to check the lot code on their containers and, if it matches the affected lot codes or if the code is no longer visible, discontinue use of the product and dispose of it immediately.
