Infant chimpanzee at L.A. Zoo killed by adult male chimpanzee in front of zoo visitors
A 3-month-old chimpanzee at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens was killed Tuesday afternoon in front of zoo visitors, fatally injured by an adult male chimpanzee within her troop.

The infant born March 6 was the daughter of Gracie. The troop of chimpanzees at the L.A. Zoo is one of the largest within a North American zoo and is managed as a wild troop with multiple males and females. The unnamed infant was gradually being introduced to the troop. According to a zoo press release, there was no indication of aggressive behavior toward the infant.
Gracie was allowed to keep the infant’s body overnight to allow her the opportunity to grieve.
