-- Hundreds of area veterinarians were among the 2 million people evacuated before Hurricane Gustav set its destructive path through the region.
Throughout Louisiana, there are 990 active American Veterinary Medical Association veterinarians with a number of them located along or near the Gulf Coast, where Gustav's fury was feared the most.
By far, Baton Rouge has the most veterinarians with 191, but New Orleans, Metairie and Lafayette also are home to a many of the state's veterinary practitioners.
New Orleans has 57 veterinarians, Metairie has 44 and Lafayette has 36.
Lake Charles, which is west of New Orleans along the coast, has 28.
