BATON ROUGE, LA. - As clean-up efforts continue, Dr. Michael Groves, dean of Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine, reports the mammoth task will take an ongoing, sustained effort.

"We desperately need veterinarians and veterinary technicians to help us in this effort."

The university is working in concert with the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, Louisiana Animal Control Association and the Louisiana SPCA to provide shelter and care for pets rescued or traveling with displaced owners, he says. Animals have been taken to LSU's Parker Coliseum and the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, La.

"It is during times of adversity and tragedy that people must come together. The School of Veterinary Medicine, along with state and local animal organizations, wants to do our part by caring for as many animals as possible," Groves says.
