Baton Rouge

-- The Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Veterinary Medicine’s Equine Medication Surveillance Laboratory (EMSL) will be conducting drug tests for all Louisiana racehorses for another three years.

The school lab earned a three-year extension of its existing contract with the Louisiana State Racing Commission last month. The lab is one of only 18 of its kind in the U.S. and tests about 8,000 horses annually.

The existing contract awarded the school about $700,000 per year, whereas the new contract will bring in about $1.4 million per year for the school for each year of the contract, according to LSU.
