DULUTH, GA.—Merial reports its newest product, OraVetâ¢, marks a breakthrough in pet oral healthcare. OraVet is a dental barrier sealant and plaque prevention gel system that is used to significantly reduce the formation of plaque and calculus — two key factors in the onset and persistence of periodontal disease.
OraVet plaque prevention
The OraVet system is a two-prong approach to dental care. This product allows the veterinarian and pet owner to work together to proactively prevent plaque and calculus build-up.
Dr. Zack Mills, executive director of Merial's Companion Animal Global Enterprises, says, "What makes this product so exciting is that it is the first preventive, clinically applied product designed specifically for animal dental care. The implications of poor dental/oral health in dogs and cats include bad breath, oral discomfort, loss of teeth and even possible systemic problems — all of which serve to diminish the strength of the human-animal bond that veterinarians strive to maintain."
Dental disease is the most commonly reported health disorder for companion animals. According to the American Dental Society, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of having oral/dental disease by the age of 3.
The product works this way, after a routine cleaning: a veterinarian applies the sealant along the gum line. This sealant is a patented polymer that electrostatically adheres to the tooth's enamel. Once applied it creates an invisible barrier that has been clinically proven to significantly reduce the formation of plaque and calculus.
