RALEIGH, NC - 9/20/206 - The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) at North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine added a dentistry service to its list of 14 services available to support referring veterinarians.
Dr. William Krug joined the Veterinary Teaching Hospital staff to direct the new service, which will consult with referring veterinarians in the diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases.
"An early oral exam by a veterinarian is important to properly diagnose gum and dental disease," Krug says. "The dentistry service will work with the pet's owner and veterinarian to ensure the best possible and seamless care for the animal's oral health."
According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, oral disease is the most common health problem among dogs and cats with 80 percent of companion animals showing signs of some oral disease by age 3. The signs of possible gum and dental issues include: bad breath; loose teeth or teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar; abnormal drooling, dropping food from the mouth or swallowing food whole; bleeding from the mouth; sensitivity in the mouth area; and loss of appetite or other changes in eating or chewing habits.
