A federal appeals court recently upheld a 1949 law that bans horse slaughtering in Texas. As a result, the Lone Star State could shutter two of the nation's three processing plants that deal in horse meat for consumption outside the United States. The AVMA is against the ban, arguing that the humane disposal of unwanted animals is better than the suffering of horses that are abandoned by owners who can't or won't take care of them.
