Synbiotics Corp. announces the addition of a new use for ICG Status-LH

Synbiotics Corp. announces the addition of a new use for ICG Status-LH, the luteinizing hormone detection test currently used for accurate canine ovulation timing. This additional claim enables veterinarians to use Status-LH to determine whether a bitch has been spayed. Intact female dogs generally test positive for luteinizing hormone (LH) only twice a year when they are in estrus. Ovariectomized dogs test positive for LH continuously, as the negative feedback from the ovaries has been removed, the company says.Status-LH is now able to address a scenario frequently encountered by private practitioners and animal shelters. A dog is anesthetized, prepped and operated upon only to discover that it has already been spayed. Now, with this 20-minute, in-clinic blood test, a veterinarian can accurately and easily determine the reproductive status of the bitch. Research to establish this new claim was conducted by researchers at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown, PEI, Canada. Preliminary research in cats is ongoing at another veterinary university and looks promising for a feline claim in the near future.
