Albany, Ore.
- The police department in Albany teamed up with the SafeHaven Humane Society to raise money to pay veterinarians for emergency services.
The Linn Samaritan Fund will be available for the care of animals found by police.
In the past, when police responded to injured-animal calls, often the animal was put down or the officer would contact a local veterinarian for help. Veterinarians didn't object, but the fund was started to help cover their out-of-pocket costs.
So far, $2,000 has been collected, with $1,500 of that donated by the police department.
The non-profit SafeHaven group is administering the fund, and hopes to partner with other cities to offer the program countywide.
