In this on-demand AVMA course by Dr. Dietrich Volkmann, suggestions for routine post-resolution care of equine dystocia as well as a list of the most common complications will be offered. (1 CE credit)
Moderate to severe cases of equine dystocia have traditionally been resolved through referral to tertiary care centers or have resulted in euthanasia of the mare. A paradigm for decision making regarding the ability to resolve the dystocia in a field setting will first be presented, followed by a protocol for the economical resolution of such dystocias. Initial stabilization and supportive care of the mare will be reviewed, followed by a systematic approach to fetal mutation and fetotomy. Suggestions for routine post-resolution care as well as a list of the most common complications will be offered. (1 CE credit)
