Hill's introduces Prescription Diet® j/d, a pet food clinically proven to reduce pain and improve mobility in dogs with osteoarthritis.

"Prescription Diet j/d contains the highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids and the lowest omega 6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio among therapeutic foods for dogs with arthritis," the company says.

The product also contains glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate and L-carnitine to help maintain optimum body weight.

"We allow the doctor to supplement the diet with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) or other therapies that might be appropriate, and they appear to be synergistic, so they work well together," says Dr. Bill Schoenherr, principal scientist, Hill's Pet Nutrition.

When using dry j/d in correlation with the canned formula, reduce the amount of dry food served to avoid overfeeding. Maintaining a healthy weight is an important factor in joint health, the company says.
