Washington
-- Drug companies will pay user fees for the first time following President Bush's signature on an amendment to the Food Drug and Cosmetic Act.
The Animal Generic Drug User Act of 2008 amends the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to require generic animal drug companies to pay user fees that will allow the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to better ensure the safety and effectiveness of new generic animal drugs.
The president also signed the Animal Drug User Fee Amendments Act of 2008, which originally was passed in 2003 but would have expired on Sept. 30. His signature extends the act until 2013, allowing the FDA to continue collecting fees to enhance the new animal drug review process.
