To stay on the right side of the law, follow these guidelines, set forth in the CAN-SPAM Act, for commercial e-mails to existing and potential clients:

  • Make sure the "To" and "From" fields are accurate and correctly identify the person or company sending the message, and the subject line represents the e-mail's content.

  • Offer an option for recipients to opt out of receiving future commercial e-mails from you—and honor those requests.

  • Include a valid postal address.
