Purina unveils AI-powered litter box system

Nestlé Purina Petcare is debuting the Petivity Smart Litterbox System, which includes a smartphone app and uses artificial intelligence (AI) via a litter box monitor placed under the litter box to capture and translate behavioral data (ig, significant changes in weight, frequency, waste type, and elimination schedule) into actionable insights to help cat parents provide proactive care.

According to a company release,¹ through the AI technology, the Petivity Smart Litterbox System identifies meaningful changes that signify health conditions that may require a veterinarian's attention or diagnosis. The system automatically notifies the owner on the smartphone app if a change in their cat’s behavior requires their attention.

"The Petivity Smart Litterbox System allows cat owners to get personalized insights to their cat's litterbox usage," commented Avi Shaprut, DVM, Purina veterinarian, in the release.¹ "While the device is not intended to diagnose, treat, mitigate or cure any conditions, it can help detect changes that can be early signs of health conditions like diabetes, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, urinary tract infections and obesity, allowing cat owners to proactively seek out veterinary care earlier and unlock better outcomes.”

The Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor System is particularly advantageous for individuals concerned about their cat's health or who want to to be proactive about their feline's overall wellness. It can also benefit those monitoring cats with diagnosed conditions or for those in need of a weight management tool.
