Tri-Delta Diagnostics Inc. introduces Equine Rapid Pregnancy Test.
Tri-Delta Diagnostics Inc. introduces Equine Rapid Pregnancy Test. This test uses a small drop of blood serum or plasma applied to a cassette-type device to determine the pregnancy status of mares from 120 days after mating until the expected time of foaling.
This test can tell whether or not the foal being carried is viable or not, allowing veterinary intervention if required at an early stage.
Equitest-ES works by detecting estrone sulphate. This steroid is produced by the fetal-placental unit in all breeds of horses in response to a viable pregnancy. The test uses an immunochromatographic procedure to measure serum/plasma concentrations of estrone sulphate.
The test takes five to 10 minutes and can be performed without sophisticated laboratory equipment. Each test requires 0.1-0.2 mls of serum or plasma to be applied using the dropper provided. The serum/plasma sample is dropped into the well of a cassette, which holds the test membrane. Serum/plasma from a non-pregnant mare produces a visible red line and red dot on the test membrane, while only a single red line on the test membrane indicates the mare is pregnant.
Equitest-ES can be used to test all breeds of horses and donkeys. The test is useful for pregnancy testing miniature mares where pregnancy diagnosis by rectal palpation or internal ultrasound scanning is not recommended because of the breed's small size.
Initial trials of the test in laboratories have shown extremely high correlation between the results produced by the EquiTest-ES and sophisticated standard laboratory methods.
