Spring Valley, Wis. -- A recall initiated in January for possibly contaminated alcohol and iodine prep pads, alcohol swabs and alcohol swabsticks now includes products in several equine and canine first-aid kids.

Triad Group, which manufactures alcohol and iodine prep pads used in the first-aid kits, sold by Creative Pet Products and MAI/Genesis (Veterinary Concepts) has extended its original January recall several times, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating reports of human illnesses and maybe even the death of a Texas toddler allegedly linked to Triad products’ possible contamination with
Bacillus cereus
and
Elizabethkingia menigoseptica
. In April, FDA seized $6 million worth of medical supplies from Triad’s Wisconsin plant. Pad material and foil lining on the product packaging is believed to be the source of contamination, according to FDA.
Triad manufactures and distributes medical products across the country, including private label products for major retailers like Wal-Mart, Target and CVS.
The animal first-aid kits affected by the recall are all lot numbers of Creative Pet Products’ Sporting Dog Kit, Sporting Dog II Kit, Horse Aid Kit, and K9 First Aid Police and Military Kit for the alcohol prep pads, and lot numbers starting with 8, 9, 0 or 1 for Horse Aid Kit, Sporting Dog Kit and Sporting Dog II Kit for the iodine prep pads.
Customers are advised to remove and destroy any alcohol or iodine prep pads from the kits, and contact Creative Pet Products at sales@petfirstaidkits.com or (877) 269-6911 for replacement products.
