Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
- Dean Richardson, DVM, the equine orthopedic surgeon who treated 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, will be the guest speaker at the National Museum of Racing's 2008 Hall of Fame induction ceremony Aug. 4 at Saratoga Race Course.
Richardson is the Charles W. Raker Professor of Equine Surgery and chief of large-animal surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital at New Bolton Center, near Philadelphia.
He repaired the bones in Barbaro's shattered right hind leg after the colt's breakdown in the 2006 Preakness Stakes. For eight months after the procedure, he continued treating the horse as it progressed toward recovery and then developed laminitis, which led to its death in January 2007.
The induction ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 4 at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion. Barbaro's jockey in the 2006 Derby, Edgar Prado, is among this year's racing Hall of Fame inductees.
