BEHAVIOR
Litter and litter box preferences in cats
In March's cover article, behaviorist Dr. Jacqueline C. Neilson discusses recent research findings on litter and litter box preferences in cats. By reading this article, practitioners can provide clients with evidence-based advice on litters and litter boxes that may help minimize toileting problems. Findings suggest that 1.) clumping litters and litters with activated carbon (Fresh Step® Scoop-The Clorox Company) are preferred by cats over those containing bicarbonate of soda; 2.) if fragranced litter is used, cedar scent is preferred by cats over other scents; and 3.) large/jumbo litter boxes are preferred over smaller litter boxes.
ANESTHESIA, PAIN
Local and regional analgesia: Part 2
The second part of this four-part series provides an overview of analgesic techniques that practitioners can easily do and that help greatly in managing patient pain. The article covers intra-articular stifle blocks, brachial plexus nerve blocks (with a nerve locator sidebar), intercostal nerve blocks, and intrapleural nerve blocks.
DIAGNOSTICS, ENDOCRINOLOGY
A challenging case: Severe hypercalcemia in a puppy with hypoadrenocorticism
To uncover the cause of this puppy's severe hypercalcemia, internists performed a CBC, a serum chemistry profile, a urinalysis, and an ACTH stimulation test. Treatment included fluids, glucocorticoids, desoxycorticosterone pivalate, antibiotics, a gastric acid reducer, and a mineralocorticoid.
