PULLMAN, WASH. - 05/31/05 - London-based Wellcome Trust awarded $1.8 million to Washington State University (WSU) College of Veterinary Medicine's efforts to develop a vaccine for Babesiosis.

Researchers at WSU have successfully decoded the genetic structure of Babesia bovis during its Babesia bovis Genome Sequencing Project. B. bovis is a tick-transmitted protozoan parasite of cattle that infects and results in the destruction of erythrocytes, causing severe anemia.

The Texas strain was selected for genomic sequencing because the history of this isolate is well documented, and it is known to be virulent. A combined clone-by-clone and whole-genome shotgun approach will be used to obtain the complete genome sequence for this organism.
