Manhattan, Kan.

-- This year's World Rabies Day National Symposium, set for Sept. 19 at Kansas State University's Alumni Center, will feature a discussion of the One Health Initiative in addition to presentations on rabies prevention and control.

KSU was chosen as the symposium site after its student chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association had the highest documented participation in last year's World Rabies Day events.

The symposium contest is hosted by the Alliance for Rabies Control, a nonprofit group that created the World Rabies Day campaign. Merial sponsors the symposium.

This year's theme is "Kansas State University: promoting One Health through World Rabies Day." A key presentation will be on the One Health Initiative, the movement to forge collaboration between physicians, veterinarians and other scientific and health disciplines. One Health Kansas will be discussed, and there will be talks on the public-health implications of rabies on global, national and local levels.

Speakers will include public-health officials, physicians, veterinary and medical students, faculty and practicing veterinarians.

KSU's Veterinary Diagnostic Rabies Laboratory is the principal diagnostic lab for Kansas and Nebraska and one of the highest-volume rabies serology centers in the world for humans and animals.
