Q. I'm interested in continuing education and more job training, but every time I approach the doctor, she blows me off. What should I do?

It's possible that your employer just didn't know how to respond to your request, says Sheila Grosdidier, RVT, a Firstline Editorial Advisory Board member and a consultant with VMC Inc. in Evergreen, Colo. Her recommendation: Try taking another route to get your point across. "Write a memo that outlines an opportunity you've noticed for the practice. For example, maybe you could do more senior profiles," says Grosdidier. "Then explain how continuing education in this specific area would benefit the practice."

If you prove that continuing education would be an advantage for everybody, the doctor may be more inclined to approve it. So it's key to focus on the benefits to clients, pets, and the practice, Grosdidier says.
