California veterinary revenues hold steady

Small animal practices fare well, but specialty practices continue to struggle.

While the state of California continues to fight the recession, small animal veterinarians appear to be on the road to recovery. According to data collected by Gatto McFerson CPAs, small animal practices have stabilized, with revenues growing steadily since the beginning of the year. Northern California practices performed slightly better from January to June, with gross revenues rising 2.1 percent this year, as compared to 2008. Southern California practices also stayed in the black, with a revenue increase of 0.9 percent. Both figures were adjusted for price increases.

Specialty and emergency practices didn't perform quite as well. Throughout the state, these practices saw a 9.6 percent drop in revenue for the year, compared to 2008.

The data was collected from more than 100 practices throughout the state. Click here to view past results.
