The Food and Drug Administration intends to determine the safety of enrofloxacin for use in poultry via a proposed hearing to be scheduled later this year.
In 2000, the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) proposed to withdraw approval of enrofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone with the trade name, Baytril. This Bayer Corp. product is approved for treating chickens and turkeys for bacterial infections.
In its proposal, CVM states the use of fluoroquinolones in poultry causes development of fluoroquinolone-resistant Campylobacter bacteria in poultry. In addition the fluoroquinolone-resistant Campylobacter bacteria are transferred to humans, which can be hazardous to their health.
FDA's Administrative Law Judge, Daniel J. Davidson, will preside over the hearing. A pre-hearing conference is scheduled for April 8.
