Hairy women a sign of a tough economy

Article

The beauty industry-once considered recession proof like the veterinary industry- is taking a hard hit.

According to the National Cosmetology Association, the beauty industry is taking a hard hit during these tough economic times. With clients feeling the pinch of high gas and food prices, they're choosing to forgo regular haircuts, manicures, pedicures, and waxings. A client who had his or her hair trimmed every six weeks may now be choosing to have it trimmed every eight or 12 weeks.

In addition, cosmetology clients are cutting back on how much they tip their stylists. Sixty-nine percent of cosmetologists who responded to a survey conducted by the NCA said they're experiencing a reduction in tips and 74 percent said they're seeing clients spend less on services. The NCS says that in the past, the cosmetology industry has been recession proof-much like the veterinary industry.
