Columbus, Ohio
--The Ohio House of Representatives recently struck down a long-standing designation in Ohio law that pit bull are inherently vicious.
The House’s attempt to remove the pit bull language that some have called discriminatory is being attached through a modification to House Bill 55, which would modify Ohio’s animal cruelty statutes to allow animals to be included in domestic protection orders.
Ohio currently is the only state the designate pit bulls as vicious, and the state law triggers a variety of special requirements for pit bull owners, specifically in regard to insurance policies. The move to eliminate the vicious designation for pit bulls was backed by the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association and passed in the House by a vote of 86-10. It now moves to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
