Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) has been widely accepted in human medicine for non-pharmaceutical pain control therapy. TENS is the transmission of small, electrical pulses through the skin to the underlying peripheral nerves. The JPT-2000 Physio-Therapy unit, from Jorgensen Laboratories, is designed specifically for veterinary use. It is a hand-held unit with small pads that attach to the animals affected area. The JPT-2000 creates high frequency, continuous mild electrical currents that may serve to block the pain signals traveling to the brain. The unit is also thought to stimulate the body to release beta-endorphins.
