Lots of 9Lives, EverPet and Special Kitty distributed between December 20 and January 3.
The J.M. Smucker Co. has announced a limited voluntary recall of certain lots of 9Lives, EverPet and Special Kitty canned cat foods due to possible low levels of thiamine (vitamin B1), according to a release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The affected product was distributed to a limited number of retailers from December 20, 2016, to January 3, 2017. This recall has been expanded to six more products following the initial recall notification.
The issue was discovered during a review of production records by the company's quality assurance team at the manufacturing facility. No illnesses related to the possible low levels of thiamine have been reported and the product is being recalled out of an abundance of caution, the release says.
Cats that are fed diets low in thiamine for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Symptoms of a deficiency can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature, such as decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases neurological signs can develop, including ventroflexion of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling and seizures.
No other Smucker products are affected by this recall. Consumers who have cans of cat food from the impacted lots should stop feeding it to their cats and call (800) 828-9980 or contact consumer.relations@jmsmucker.com, according to the release.
