Award presented by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine honors Fox’s noteworthy 41-year career in veterinary cardiology
The Stephen and Christine Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC) has announced that Philip Fox, DVM, MSc, DACVIM/ECVIM (Cardiology), DACVECC, senior veterinarian, service head of cardiology, Vincent Astor chair in Comparative Medicine, and director, Caspary Research Institute, has been awarded the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine’s 2022 Lifetime Specialty Achievement Award.
According to a company release,1 the award celebrates prominent leaders who have made outstanding contributions in their specialty.
“It is a privilege to receive the 2022 Lifetime Specialty Achievement Award from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine,” said Fox. “I would like to share this award with the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center for recognizing and supporting the continued research efforts into veterinary cardiology and give special thanks to the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine for this honor.”
Fox is renowned globally as a leader in cardiology and research and spearheaded the global REVEAL Study, a collaborative 10-year investigation throughout 50 veterinary centers in 21 countries that revealed how hypertrophic cardiomyopathy—a form of heart disease that can cause sudden death and heart failure in humans—is also associated with serious feline health problems.
Fox has also served as a longtime service head of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center’s Cardiology Service, treating thousands of patients, and has made substantial publications. Fox is the founder of the Partners in Practice program, created to recognize the importance of clinical applicability, in fulfillment of AMC’s goal to offer world-class education for the veterinary community.
“Dr. Phil Fox is a true leader in veterinary cardiology. His career highlights are numerous and include substantial contributions to patient care, training, and mentorship at all levels of veterinary professionals, service to the community, the ACVIM and the specialty of veterinary cardiology, landmark publications in both veterinary and human scientific literature as well as his most recent passion of advancing the science of cardiology pathology and imaging,” expressed Steven Rosenthal, DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology), Cardiology Specialty president at the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, who nominated Fox for the award.
“Dr. Fox’s efforts are an integral part of our current understanding of the natural history, pathology, and treatment of veterinary cardiac disease. He has positively influenced the careers of many cardiologists and the lives of their patients around the globe,” he added.
“Through his accomplishments as a veterinarian, leader, educator, and researcher, Dr. Philip Fox has helped to advance veterinary medicine worldwide,” commented Kathryn Coyne, president and Chief Executive Officer at Schwarzman AMC, in the release. “Over the course of his illustrious 41-year career in veterinary medicine, Dr. Philip Fox has made, and continues to make, substantial contributions to veterinary cardiology medicine.”1
