The new clinic is in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington, DC
Small Door Veterinary is a membership-based and technology-powered veterinary care platform that is better for pets, pet owners, and veterinarians. The company announced in a release1 that it is expanding into Washington, DC with a location in Navy Yard (949 First Street, SE). According to the release, the new Navy Yard practice is the second location to open in the city this month, as Small Door aims to continue providing veterinary care for DC pet owners.
Membership at Small Door costs $169 per pet per year and includes 1 free exam, same or next day appointments, 24/7 telemedicine, time with trusted medical professionals, and modern facilities equipped with the latest technology. Small Door was one of the first veterinary care companies to become a certified B Corp and the company also works to obtain American Animal Hospital Association accreditation for all of its practices.
“The reception by DC pet owners has been remarkable, with sign-ups and bookings at levels as high as we've seen,” said Josh Guttman, co-founder and CEO of Small Door, in the release. “Pet ownership spiked during the pandemic, as people sought companionship while they worked from home. As a result, the demand for high quality vet care in the DMV area has surged and our early success in the market validates our belief that a reimagined, modern, warm approach to veterinary care is exactly what pet owners want. We’re thrilled to have earned the trust of so many pet lovers in the city so quickly, and now folks have the added convenience and access of an additional location.”1
The new Navy Yard location will be led by Mike Dugan, DVM as managing veterinarian and Amari Wells, DVM, USDA Accredited, as senior veterinarian. Dugan has been practicing in DC for over 30 years and specializes in general medicine with vested interest in emergency medicine, surgery, and dentistry. Prior to this, Dugan practiced at the ASPCA Animal Hospital in New York City.
“In addition to the incredibly impressive team that we’ve assembled, I think that DC pet owners will also appreciate the ability to access telemedicine any time of day,” said Dugan in the release. “Having expert knowledge at the tip of your fingers twenty-four hours a day can provide peace of mind and mitigate unnecessary trips to the emergency room in the middle of the night. The Small Door membership model, combined with two convenient locations, will also ensure quick, quality in-person care.”1
According to the release, Wells has a deep passion for strengthening the human animal bond, which led her to become Fear Free Certified. She enjoys all aspects of general practice, but her particular interests include preventative medicine, dermatology, palliative care, and surgery.
“From the moment you enter the practice, you will feel the Small Door magic,” said Wells. “Our first visit appointments are an hour long so that we can sit together and learn about who your furry family member is before we launch into any recommendations - because each pet truly is unique, and we will treat them as such. Small Door is perfect for the pet parents out there who are engaged in their pet’s care, curious to learn, and willing to work collaboratively with their veterinarian.”1
