The latest industry trends and a look into our Top Recommended Veterinary Products guide
The pet products industry continues to experience growth, with spending increasing nearly 11% in the past year. As owners prioritize their pets’ health and happiness, the market for pet products remains healthy, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA).1
The industry saw more than $135 billion in sales in 2022, demonstrating a 10.8% increase in spending from 2021. Results from a survey by the APPA also indicated that $58.1 billion were spent by owners on pet foods, including treats, in 2022—an increase of 16.2% from the previous year. Although pet food was the highest spending category and saw the largest increase in spending for the industry, various categories also experienced growth in spending, including veterinary care products, pet supplies, and over-the-counter medications.1
In results from an APPA survey of pet owners, two-thirds of respondents consider their pets in their financial plans. Pet owners demonstrated commitment to their animals’ standard of care, including diet (75%) and brand loyalty (56%), in contrast with those respondents (31%) who have an overall view of pet supplies as discretionary and plan to reduce spending on those purchases.1
In 2022, dvm360® published our first Top Recommended Veterinary Products guide, a useful resource to help owners make informed decisions based on the expert opinions of our veterinarian readers. As veterinary professionals continue to counsel clients on product choices for their pets, our recommendations provide guidance by showcasing the brands and products that were most highly recommended by their peers.
The second annual Top Recommended Veterinary Products survey, conducted by The Agency Network at MJH Life Sciences®, asked more than 800 companion animal veterinarians for their recommendations on brands in pet product categories that included companion animal food and treats, behavior, nutraceuticals, oral health, dermatology, parasite prevention, and toys. The pages of this publication are organized by product category and contain detailed pie charts that show the percentage of veterinarians who recommend each product. (Survey results total 100%; percentages shown in the charts are rounded.)
Additionally, these product recommendations are viewable online, where the information is searchable by category. Articles with additional information about these categories are also included in print and on our website. We hope you find our survey results useful and enjoy reading the 2023 Top Recommended Veterinary Products guide.
