Aiea, Hawaii - 1/10/08 - Initial testing for a human West Nile virus vaccine has gotten the green light from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Hawaii Biotech Incorporated's approval will allow them to begin early-phase human clinical trials on 24 patients, according to an Associated Press report.

With no approved human vaccines currently available, the company hopes trials will prove the effectiveness of their vaccination technology, says Carolyn Weeks-Levy, Biotech president.

The United States saw 3,404 cases of West Nile virus and 98 deaths in 2007, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
