Cleo, pictured here as a kitten, has made several appearances in Firstline over the years. Her owner, Jennifer Graham, a client services representative at Bradford Hills Animal Hospital, first wrote about Cleo in the July 2009 article, "When Your Pet is the Patient."

Nearly three years after her original article, Graham wrote the follow-up story, "Ease the Strain of Chronic Illness" (June 2012). In the article, Graham draws on her experience as a veterinary team member and owner of a pet with a chronic illness to offer four tips to help team members take care of clients dealing with their pets' long-term illnesses.

Cleo made frequent trips to the veterinarian for monitoring to manage her hyperthyroidism. Graham, who cross-trained as a veterinary assistant, learned to juggle her pet's medication, dietary needs, and offer SQ fluids.

On Oct. 22, 2012, Graham made the difficult choice to euthanize Cleo. She talks about the experience of managing her grief in the January 2013 article," Coping With Grief at Work."
