Mrs. Dizzy is one of my best clients. However, when you first meet her it doesn't take long to figure out that she doesn't have both oars in the water. Each and every office visit with her is a bit time-consuming because explanations must be simplified and then repeated several times. We don't mind. She's cooperative, loves her pets and, most important of all, pays her bills. (Everyone can't be a rocket scientist, you know.)

Shawnee, Kan. - Joerg Ohle, president and general manager of Bayer Animal Health, accepted an invitation from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to co-chair the Kansas Innovation Consortium, a new initiative aimed at stimulating economic growth in Kansas.

Kennett Square, Pa. - The Barbaro Fund and the Fund for Laminitis Research, both established a year ago after the death of the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner, grew substantially with recent gifts and pledges, according to the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine.

Several years after the publication of my book Imprint Training of the Newborn Foal, Monty Roberts, a renowned California horse trainer, called to tell me that he had been using my foal training method for three years with great success. I had long wanted to meet Monty, and he invited me to visit his ranch in Solvang. This led to a lasting friendship and mutual respect.

In December a judge ordered the return of Armani, a capuchin monkey, to the home of Rockville, Md., resident Elyse Gazewitz. Armani had been in custody at a zoo since May, when he was seized after an animal sanctuary employee called authorities to report Gazewitz's possession of the monkey.

Kansas City, Mo. - A federal grand jury indicted two Chinese firms, an American firm and their principals on multiple counts related to tainted pet foods that sickened or killed perhaps thousands of pets last year and triggered the largest pet-food recall in the nation's history.

Gainesville, Fla. - As government restrictions ease in Australia following a massive outbreak of equine influenza last August, officials are still investigating the cause of the outbreak.

Jackson Hole, Wyo. - A veterinarian died after accidentally slicing himself with a surgical tool while performing a necropsy on an equine patient.

Cleveland - Last fall, DVM Newsmagazine documented that complaints against veterinarians are on the rise. And now the magazine has assembled a diverse panel of thought-leaders to discuss why.

Lexington, Ky. - Four American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) leaders want to visit Mexican horse-slaughter plants following widespread reports of equine abuse and inhumane euthanasia.

Kuna, Idaho - Estimates of how much revenue the state might receive from a proposed annual fee for veterinary pharmaceutical firms in Idaho could be inflated by as much as double, according to the Idaho Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA), which is taking a neutral stand on the measure.

Portland, Ore. - Karen M. Faunt, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, was appointed vice president/chief medical officer for Banfield, The Pet Hospital.
