Riverside, Calif.

-- Riverside has joined several other California cities in requiring spaying, neutering and microchipping of all cats and dogs older than 4 months.

The measure was unanimously approved by Riverside City Council June 22, and includes a number of other animal control regulations, including limits on kennel sizes and total number of animals owned. Residents of Riverside now will be permitted to own no more than five dogs and 10 cats — unless they want to apply for a permit to keep the animal for the duration of its life. The permit, once issued, would not have to be renewed, according to legislation. Existing pets also would not be affected by the proposed ordinance.

Certain exemptions, primarily based on the animal’s health, will be made in regard to the mandatory sterilization and microchipping clauses, city officials reported.
