PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week is approaching

Article

This year’s event coming up next week will enable pet parents to meet adoptable pets and help alleviate shelters

PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week is taking place November 7-13, 2022 at nearly every PetSmart store in the North America and Puerto Rico and will feature adoptable pets brought in by animal welfare organizations. This event comes at a time when shelters are overcrowded and there is a shortage of veterinarians, staff, and volunteers.

According to an organizational release,1 while shelters struggle to keep up with the demand, adoptable pets stay longer which can lead to increasing their susceptibility to developing behavioral issues, which then in turn, makes them less likely to find homes and more likely to be returned.

During National Adoption Week, potential pet parents can engage with the adoptable pets, including cats, kittens, dogs and puppies in a safe, spacious area. Staff and volunteers will answer any questions surrounding the pets so pet parents can feel confident they can provide them the essential care.

"Earlier this year, PetSmart Charities achieved a milestone of 10 million total pet adoptions thanks to our partners and individual donors," stated Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities, in the release. "With so many shelters overflowing, together we hope to have our best National Adoption Week yet, especially for the thousands of pets currently waiting for loving homes. For these animals, the gift of a loving family at the holidays is the only item on their wish lists."1
