Norco, Calif.
-- A new microchip scanner capable of reading several brands and types of microchips used in pets and horses in the United States is now on the market.
Released by Avid Identification Systems Inc., the MiniTracker Pro can read all 125 kHz and 134.2 kHz microchips, encrypted or not.
"The design criteria for the MiniTracker Pro was based on the USDA Report on Regulation of Pet Microchipping and recommendations from the Coalition for Reuniting Pets and Families," says Dr. Dan Knox, director of companion animals for Avid.
The scanner will "help reunite more lost pets with their families," says Peter Troesch, vice president and co-founder of Avid, who also says "the MiniTracker Pro has been perfected to be a dependable tool for animal shelters and veterinarians."
The release of the scanner comes on the heels of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) House of Delegates decision to promote better linking of Pet Microchip Databases.
Avid began developing the scanner last year.
